This activity idea came from a visit to the Museum of Nature in Ottawa. They had large tubs filled with pony beads, and had replica bones inside to dig for. The bones were then assembled. The gift shop sold canisters (this is another shop online who sells them) with a few different dinosaur fossils that kids can assemble. So… my husband suggested we use dried beans (super cheap from the bulk store – that many pony beads gets very expensive). We filled a container and hid the bones - he uses a brush to carefully uncover and discover. We do need a bigger bin now, as his collection has grown, and he likes to hide several in the tub at once - then sort and assemble. This has been a huge love of his for a couple years now.
