DIY Montessori Work Trays & Boxes, Montessori Materials At Home

We have been busy making trays for various materials. We took a good look at our materials and created sizes that made sense for what we needed.

All of the trays and boxes featured here were built with pine, and the bases are masonite. The trays above are roughly the size of A4 paper.

There are many trays that are available on the market now. This was a great option for us because we had the materials on hand.

My husband has been such a sport making all these boxes and trays for us. He cuts and I glue.
The smaller divided boxes are for the Grammar farm.

These boxes can hold anything from math problem slips to paper for our Metal Insets.

We just wanted to show you that custom trays can be made with very inexpensive materials that you may even have on hand. There is nothing special about the method used to cut the materials. All of our corners are butt jointed, though you could mitre them if you prefer. We used low tact painters take to clamp everything together with simple carpenters wood glue. These boxes have been used for many different materials and have really stood up to use.

Just thought I'd share these few little goodies with you!

  1. I love these! What did you make the boxes out of, exactly? I would love to do something similar, if possible, because that is one of my biggest things is finding a place for all the little slips of paper, etc. that are needed daily!

    1. Thanks Amy:) I love all of these little boxes!! It is literally finger jointed pine lattice molding from Home Depot:) The bottoms are really thin Masonite. They are glued with wood carpenters glue and taped with low tact painters tape to dry and then sanded really well. Super cheap and simple!! :)
