Fall Apple Tasting Activity With Kids, Fall Science & Nature Activities At Home

Every year we visit our favourite local orchards to pick or to buy apples. This fun, was born from a visit to beautiful family owned orchard. They have a sweet little shop filled with baskets of the different varieties of apples that they grow. The shop smells amazing, and it's a treat for the senses all on it's own.

Xander loved this activity!!
To get the idea of sweet and sour sensations, I had some very sweet and sour candies that he tasted. You could also do this with sugar, salt, and lemons, whatever you choose!

Miss Ava was very big on the taste test 💕
She was about two years old here, so this will be fun to try again with her!

Xander tasted each apple. We chatted about the flavor, texture and shape of the apple, then he circled sweet, sour or even both on the tongue diagram. He wrote the name, taste and texture for each apple. We examined the skin of each apple, and Xander used crayons to draw each variety.

The sheets we created can be stapled into an Apple Tasting Book 💕

We made a simple Apple Crisp with the remains of our tasting, sooo good💕
Here's how we made it!
Slice your apples and line them up in your baking dish. We used a dish to fit the amount of apples we had left.
In a mixing bowl combine 1/4 cup of oats, 1/4 cup flour, 1/4 cup of brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon of all spice.
1/2 stick of butter and with your fingers (fun for kids) mix and crumble together, and spread this mixture over your apples.
This is approx so reduce the amount for less apples and adjust the spice to your taste.

This was such a fun experience!!
We visit this orchard but we also visit this orchard with family and friends yearly!!

Our favourite apple peeler!!

  6. I know this is an old post, but we just had an apple tasting picnic and it was a wonderful sensory activity while expanding our culinary vocabulary (tart, sweet, mealy, etc). We even made a greek yogurt and peanut butter dip to go with it...YUM!! LOve the idea of expanding the project by making a book too :)
