DIY Land & Water Form Activity Mat, Montessori Early Geography Materials At Home

I was inspired to create this mat by an amazing Land and Water Form Mat I'd found online, but it was very expensive. So we decided it would be amazing to make it.

This is a piece of painters canvas/drop cloth, that I soaked for a bit in hot water to rinse and make it pliable to hold blue dye fabric dye. You could also use blue fabric or canvas. Drop cloth is very inexpensive and we had some from another project so this was very reasonable for us.

I trimmed the edges of the mat,  turned over and ironed the hem. I decided to hot glue the hem in place.  I drew the design free form with pen, and painted the land with acrylic craft paint.
I used our land and water 3 part cards to make the labels.
We added a lighthouse from a trip to Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia.  My Husband made the mountain and hill forms from layered Masonite that he glued together.  He also made a tiny wooden boat.  The plane and car are from a craft store.

This is a great addition to our Land and  Water Globe cards and trays.

I love how this turned out, and more                             importantly so do the kids!
