DIY Continents Mat, Montessori Geography Materials At Home

This was a very simple, and inexpensive mat to make!
This is our version of a Montessori inspired World Continents Mat. I used painters canvas because I had it on hand from making our Land, Water & Air Mat here.

Here's how we made ours...

I hand painted the canvas background with acrylic paints that I watered down.

The continent images are from here. I scaled up the images, and did a reverse/mirror print of them.

I used spray adhesive to glue them to the back of my felt.

I did this because it made for really easy cutting of the images, and it also provided a far more opaque color to the continents. I found the felt very transparent when laid on the background (unless you use better felt).
My felt is from the dollar store.  I laid it all out, and then piece by piece glued everything in place with a hot glue gun. You could also stitch them in place.
I used a large quilting ruler to trim and square the edges of the canvas mat, but you could use anything you like.
I applied Mod Podge to the edges to keep the canvas from fraying. You could also apply seam binding if you wish, or turn and stitch the sides.

The uses for these mats are endless. We have used it for identification of the continents and labelling, transferring the continent puzzle pieces onto the mat for matching, placing animals on their appropriate continents, dinosaur figures for placing on their continent of origin, as well world landmarks.
