Division is not a new concept for Xander. as we have worked here and there with
beads and blocks etc.
In a class there would be several children employed to carry out exercises together (video of a traditional division lesson after it shows addition), but since this is not possible for us at home we used our sweet little wooden children instead. We used them for multiplication as well and you can check that out here.
I also created a few sheets to help us out a bit, and again we worked directly from our number boxes. We did not record any work today.
Xander read this very brief definition of division. The division terms are on the sheet, but we did not discuss them this go round, we will the next lesson. The two sheets with the very large number squares were for Xander to place his number cards on, since we were not recording today.
We did some basic review, and talked about a how we could write out a division problem.
Then we used prepared problem slips to perform some basic static division.
First Xander placed his "wooden" children to give all an equal share. He made his dividend in cards, and placed it on top of his mat, and then took the corresponding quantity in gold beads. Then he started distributing quantities. My expectation was that he would start distributing hundreds "one" per child, but because this was static division meaning no remainder (he picked up on this right away) he went right a head and gave each child their share for each value.
He made the quotient with his cards, and then we transferred it to a slip.
We created our own small number cards and boxes.
This was a lot of fun. We had lots of giggles with our tiny wooden kids 💗
